River Street Project Update

From: Philip White – Trinity Council President
Re:
Update on the River Street project
Date: 2/26/2010

At the last City Council meeting the City Council decided to drop the sidewalk portion of the project. This will save the residents and Trinity Lutheran Church the cost of the sidewalk, new curb and gutters, new approach aprons to driveway, and new catch basins for the storm sewers. How much this will affect the assessments cost of the remainder of the project for trinity has not been estimated yet. We will continue to keep you informed as to the project, the cost to Trinity, and the impact it will have on Trinity this summer. The repairs and street resurfacing are scheduled for this summer after the studies and bids have been let out.

The city of Monticello is going to be doing a repair project on West River St. this summer. Included in this project are necessary sewer and water repairs and a resurfacing of the street from highway 25, west to otter creek road. In addition, the city has proposed a narrowing of west river street to accommodate a new side walk from west bridge park to otter creek road. This will require removal and replacement of the present curbs and gutter, driveway approaches, storm drain catch basins, and removal of trees etc to make room for this side walk. These changes also affect the roads that connect west River Street to Broadway. The cost of this project will be assessed 20% to the property owners and 80% to the general funds of the city. Trinity is classified as a commercial property, and as such will be assessed 92 dollars a running foot for our share of the project. With three streets of our property affected, our share has been estimated at a cost in excess of $40,000.00. The estimates are all preliminary and only one meeting has been held. I do not have the estimates of cost if the sidewalk project were not done. The congregation at the annual meeting voted to have the council monitor the project and draft a letter of opposition to the sidewalk portion the repairs and to have a letter of opposition drafted and be make available for those in the congregation to sign if they would like. Information on this project is available at city hall.
